FAQs
We describe the different types of watches in a couple of ways, either by its purpose or its movement. By purpose we mean whether you’re wearing it for fashion or something specific like diving. And by movement we mean what powers the watch. Here’s a quick summary of the different types of watches you’ll find across Hoskings watch brands:
- Fashion watch – worn as an accessory.
- Dress watch – dress to impress for work or event.
- Digital watch – electronic display.
- Analogue watch – traditional ‘clock’ face.
- Hybrid watch – traditional appearance of a classic watch with the benefit of smart technology.
- Chronograph watch – stopwatch with multiple sub-dials to measure periods of time without interfering with the watch.
- Fitness watch – for fitness tracking: activity, sleep etc.
- Smartwatch – connect to your smartphone with extras: e.g. fitness tracking, sleep monitoring. Health data.
- Sports watch – a more rugged watch great for sporting activities.
- Diving watch – used for water sports and diving.
- Pocket watch – designed to be carried in a pocket.
- Nurses watch – worn attached to the nurse’s uniform.
- Automatic watch – low maintenance, self-winding watch using energy from movement.
- Mechanical watch – requires manual hand-winding of springs.
- Quartz watch – very popular battery operated.
- Solar watch and Eco-Drive watch – converts light into energy.
We may be slightly biased, but we think the best place in Australia to buy watches online is right here. Hoskings Jewellers was established in 1945 as speciality watch makers, so you’re guaranteed great quality and excellent customer service.
Here's just some of Hoskings watch brands you’ll find online and in store:

Here are the most popular types of watches:

Most watches come with a degree of water resistance, which means they’re able to resist water splashes. However, it’s important to realise very few watches are entirely waterproof. Here are the different grades of water resistance you’ll find in Hoskings watch brands:
- 30M Water Resistance: Accidental light splashes.
- 50M Water Resistance: OK to wear while hand washing & in shallow water.
- 100M Water Resistance: Fine for swimming & snorkelling, but not for water sports.
- 200M Water Resistance: Suitable for serious water sports e.g. surfing or jet skiing, but not scuba diving.
- 200M DIVERS: Designed for scuba diving, however not at depths that require helium gas.
