Lab-Created Diamonds FAQs
If you’ve read our blog post “What are lab-created diamonds?”, then you’ll know that we’re huge fans of lab-created diamonds here at Hoskings. If you don’t have time to read the blog, then this page will help answer some common questions.
Lab-created diamonds are also called lab grown diamonds, man-made diamonds, created diamonds, synthetic diamonds, manufactured diamonds, or cultured diamonds. These diamonds have the same physical and chemical make up as naturally occurring diamonds – the only difference is that lab-created diamonds are made in laboratory instead of being mined.
Lab-created diamonds ARE real diamonds.
Naturally occurring, or mined diamonds formed in the earth’s mantle billions of years ago due to pressure and heat and are brought to the surface by mining. More than half of the world’s diamonds are now sourced from Russia and Canada.
Lab-created diamonds are grown in laboratory conditions that mimics the natural production of diamonds, but the technology allows the process to happen in a matter of weeks. Otherwise, lab-created diamonds are the same in every way to naturally occurring diamonds. It’s impossible to see the difference between a naturally occurring diamond and a lab-created diamond without using specialised equipment.
Absolutely! Lab-created diamonds offer the same quality and brilliance as mined diamonds. But because they take only a few weeks to grow they are slightly more affordable than mined diamonds.
As the market for lab-created diamonds in jewellery is still relatively new, the value is still fluctuating. But it’s worth noting that with the exception of a few very rare, larger stones, all diamonds will lose value after they’ve been sold. In the past, if you went to sell your mined diamond, you might get around half of the original purchase price.
As lab-created diamonds are just as beautiful and durable as mined diamonds, they will last you a lifetime and continue to be a wonderful heirloom for many generations.
Hoskings customers often choose lab-created diamonds over mined diamonds because they get more bling for their buck. And as the trend towards choosing fancy coloured diamonds for engagement rings continues to grow, we predict that lab-created diamonds will become even more desirable.
Although many mined diamonds are known to be a good asset over a long period of time, the investment outcome for lab-created diamonds is still in its infancy. The appeal of having ethically sourced diamonds, created with renewable energy sources certainly seems attractive to future generations.
In the last few decades, diamond companies have made many advances to limit their environmental impact and work with local communities to ensure fair and ethical practices.
Lab diamonds have less direct environmental impact but do require a large amount of energy to produce. As alternative sustainable energy sources become more widely available, they will become more ecologically friendly.
Not without specialised equipment! If you choose a lab-created diamond engagement ring, it will look just the same as a mined diamond ring. And it will bring just as many admiring glances as any other gorgeous diamond engagement ring!
They have the same physical, chemical and optical properties and are just as dazzlingly sparkly. In fact, lab-created diamonds seem to have less inclusions which are the naturally occurring imperfections that are found in most stones.
You betcha! Lab-created diamonds can be used in rings, necklaces and more! As they’re wonderfully durable, they can be used in any piece of jewellery where you’d place mined diamonds.
