There’s no hard and fast rule for how much to spend on an engagement ring, but generally it’s expected that you’d spend approximately 2 month’s salary. For example, if your annual salary is $60,000, you’d spend around $10,000 on the engagement ring. Buy-now, pay-later services like Humm or in-store lay-by are a great way to make it work for your budget.

Diamonds are still the most popular gemstones for engagement rings. You can choose different shaped diamonds such as round, princess, oval, pear, emerald, heart, marquise or cushion shapes.
Coloured stones such as pink diamonds or multi-stone engagement rings are beautifully romantic. And lab-created diamond engagement rings are becoming firm favourites.
The most popular engagement ring shape is a solitaire with a round-cut center stone, followed by the bezel set engagement ring. The Halo engagement ring where the center stone is surrounded by accent diamonds is also very desirable.
Engagement rings come in many different carat sizes. Carat simply refers to the weight of the diamond, with 1 carat = ⅕ of a gram. A higher carat diamond is often thought to be more expensive, but the cut, clarity and colour of a diamond are also key to determining the value of the diamond.
Engagement rings like the solitaire engagement ring will usually feature one heavier or higher carat stone. Styles such as cluster engagement rings have multiple lower carat stones that when added together combine to a higher carat weight. In Australia the most popular carat size is a one carat engagement ring, or just below one carat.
