Earring size guide

Does size matter? How to find your perfect earring fit!
Yes, of course size matters! But choosing earrings isn’t just about size, there are so many other factors to consider. Earrings have been worn for different reasons throughout millennia. They tell stories of cultural heritage, identity, power and status. They enhance beauty by drawing attention to the face and they’re often purchased or given as gifts to celebrate life milestones. It’s no surprise then that some of our customers feel overwhelmed when it comes to choosing the right earrings.
That’s why the Hoskings Jewellers Team have crafted this Earring Size Guide. We’ll help you find the best fitting earrings, and we’ll answer some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about earrings. So, whether you're looking for subtle everyday earrings or statement earrings for special occasions, we’ll make sure you find the perfect size and style!

Different types of earrings
Earring sizes vary greatly, because there are many different types of earrings. Before we look at earring sizes, here’s a brief description of some earring styles:
- Chandelier earrings - As the name suggests, chandelier earrings fall from the ear, often in layers, to create a dramatic effect. They’re usually worn for glamorous, formal occasions.
- Cluster earrings - Cluster earrings are earrings with a group of small stones or pearls arranged closely together for greater impact.
- Cuff earrings - Cuff earrings wrap around the ear’s outer edge for an edgy modern look without the need for piercings.
- Hoop earrings – Hoop earrings come in various sizes and “hoopy” shapes for a multitude of looks.
- Long/Drop earrings - Long or drop earrings dangle below the earlobe, creating a graceful and elongated look.
- Pearl earrings - Pearl earrings deserve a special mention as a timeless classic that’s famous on their own right.
- Sleepers or Huggies - These are small, comfortable, lightweight that are perfect for everyday wear or even sleeping.
- Statement earrings – Bold, eye-catching and designed to stand out! They are usually large with intricate designs and vibrant colours.
- Stud earrings – A stud earring has a bar that passes through your earhole and is secured with earring backs behind your ear. They are usually very comfortable and great for everyday wear.

Essential earring size guide
When it comes to choosing earring sizes, it’s best to start with the basics. We expect that Chandelier and Statement earrings will be on the larger side, so we’ll look more specifically at studs, sleepers and hoops.
Stud earrings size guide:
Stud earrings can start as small as 2mm in diameter, but the most common sizes are between 4 to 6mms.
- 4mm studs: Small and subtle, these studs sit close to the ear and are perfect for everyday wear or for stacking with other earrings.
- 5mm studs: A slightly larger option, but still offering understated elegance, 5mm studs offer just a bit more presence and suit both casual and formal attire.
- 6mm studs: These studs are a little bolder and will add sophistication to any outfit.
Sleepers size guide:
We’re big fans of the humble sleeper earrings here at Hoskings Jewellers, as you’ll see from our blog post “What are Sleeper Earrings?”. We reckon these small but stylish earrings are a must-have in any jewellery collection.
8mm to 12mm sleepers
- 8mm sleepers: These delicate sleepers sit close to the earlobe, providing a subtle and comfortable option for everyday wear. They’re great to layer with multiple piercings or a minimalist look.
- 10mm Sleepers: 10mm sleepers offer a bit more presence while still maintaining a sleek and simple aesthetic. Great for both casual and formal settings.
- 12mm Sleepers: Slightly larger, 12mm sleepers make more of a statement without being too bold. Ideal for those who want a classic look with a bit of flair.

Hoop earring size guide
From Kate Middleton’s dainty hoop earrings to Rhianna’s statement pieces, hoop earrings are as individual as you are. The only rule is to have fun with these timeless earrings! Hoop earrings come in sizes from 8mm sleeper earrings all the way up to 50mms, so we’ll just list a few of the popular sizes here:
8mm to 50mm hoops
- 10mm hoops: These mini hoops hug the earlobe and are perfect for a subtle, everyday look. They’re great for stacking with other hoops or studs.
- 20mm hoops: 20mm hoops are a classic size, offering a bit more presence while remaining versatile enough for any occasion. They fall just below the earlobe, making them perfect for both casual and dressy outfits.
- 30mm hoops: These medium-sized hoops are bold enough to make a statement but still understated enough for everyday wear. Great for adding a touch of drama to your look!
- 50mm hoops: These are for our “go big or go home” customers! If you want to make a statement, 50mm hoops are the way to go.

Earring sizes FAQ
+ Is it OK to wear earrings all the time?
We all know what it’s like to have favourite earrings we never want to take off, but many of our customers ask us if it’s OK to wear earrings all the time? As long as you choose appropriate earrings to sleep in and use good hygiene, the answer is yes!
If you’re looking to wear your earrings all the time, it’s best to choose hypoallergenic metals like surgical steel, silver or gold to avoid irritating your ears. And wear earrings that won’t get caught in bedsheets when you sleep – ‘huggies’ or sleeper earrings are ideal for this as they’re comfortable enough to be worn around the clock. Read more about sleeper earrings in our article called “What are Sleeper Earrings?”.
If you have sensitive ears make sure you take them out every few days for a good clean. Read the FAQ below for tips on cleaning earrings.
+ Can I return or exchange earrings?
Yes, you can. Hoskings Jewellers will refund or exchange earrings within 14 days of purchase under our Change of Mind Policy if the earrings are returned in ‘As New Condition’ and in the original packaging. However special-order items and items purchased under our in-store Lay-by or Services agreement are excluded from our Change of Mind Policy. We clean and sanitise all earrings that are returned, ensuring they’re in perfect condition for the next customer.

+ What is bonded gold?
Bonded gold is 9ct gold that has been bonded to sterling silver for extra strength and durability. This technique gives you the luxurious look and sturdy feel at a fraction of the price. Hoskings’ gold-bonded jewellery comes with a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty on workmanship.
+ How do I clean my earrings?
Hoskings recommends that you use a soft cloth from our Connoisseurs jewellery cleaning range to gently wipe your earrings after each wear to prevent the build-up of oils and dirt. For a deeper clean, use a mild soap with warm water, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a clean cloth. And try to avoid harsh chemicals, as they can damage the metal and gemstones.
Our blog posts “How to clean silver jewellery” and “Cleaning Gold Jewellery” share excellent tips for keeping your earrings clean.
