There are so many different types of diamond rings it’s hard to know where to start! From engagement rings, to promise rings, eternity rings, anniversary rings, cocktail rings, and let’s not forget the men’s rings, all of these look amazing with diamonds!
When you’re choosing diamonds, you’ll need to know about the 4 Cs: colour, carat, cut and clarity. They’re the industry standard for grading diamonds. We’ve explained the 4 Cs in more detail in our blog post “How to choose an engagement ring”.
Then there’s the shape of the diamond. The popular diamond ring shapes are round (or brilliant cut), princess (or square cut), emerald, oval, pear and marquise. All of these can be set in various settings such as a claw (or ‘Prong’) setting which is the setting of choice for a stunning solitaire ring. There’s also the bezel setting, halo setting, channel setting, pavé setting or grain setting. And let’s not forget about the captivating cluster rings and tantalising trilogy rings.
Choosing a diamond ring is one of the most exciting decisions you’ll ever make, so we’re glad you’re doing your homework first! We’ve written a blog post (click here to read) to help you make an informed decision on how to choose a diamond ring.
The key things you’ll need to know are what type of diamond cut you prefer: round (or brilliant cut), princess (or square cut), cushion, oval, pear or marquise. And which of the other 4 Cs are the most important to you. That’s colour, carat and clarity. If your budget allows, most people prefer a near-colourless diamond. The carat determines the weight or size of the diamond, and clarity means finding a diamond with minimal visible inclusions (or “natural blemishes”).
You must also consider what metal will suit your chosen diamond stones and setting. There’s yellow or white gold and rose gold is another stunning pick. Finally, the best guarantee of quality is purchasing from a reputable jeweller like Hoskings. And because Hoskings has such an abundant collection of diamond rings, you’re bound to find your perfect one.
There are many diamond shapes that look stunning in diamond rings, so choosing the best comes down to your personal preference. At Hoskings Jewellers, we’ve noticed that many of our customers have favourites though. These are round (or brilliant cut), princess (or square cut), oval, pear or marquise shaped diamonds.
Round shaped diamonds which are aptly referred to as “brilliant cut” offer exceptional sparkle and never go out of fashion. Princess cut diamond rings come in a square, emerald cut is a rectangular shape and both are great for modern or art deco style rings. Cushion cut diamond rings have all the vintage glamour of Hollywood and look stunning with their rounded corners and larger facets (the flat surface on the diamond). Oval diamond rings are elegant and offer a flattering elongating look. Pear or tear-drop shaped diamond rings are dripping in elegance too. And, finally, marquise shaped diamond rings also offer a beautiful, elongated effect, for a refined classic look.
Many diamond rings can be re-sized by a professional jeweller, however there are some exceptions. Resizing a ring to make it smaller means removing metal from the band, and resizing a diamond ring to make it larger involves adding more metal to the band.
Diamond rings with plain bands are usually straightforward to re-size. However, rings with more intricate designs such as channel settings, pavé settings or grain settings require more caution. Because it’s important to maintain the structural integrity of the ring and prevent loss or damage to the diamonds, it’s vital to bring the ring in-store and speak with our knowledgeable customer service team to get their advice.
We’re so glad you asked how to clean diamond rings to keep them sparkling! Here are some quick tips on how to clean diamond rings:
- Regularly use a specialised cleaning cloth like these Connoisseur cleaning cloths.
- If you tend to get your ring mucky, for example from gardening or baking, then it’s a good idea to gently wash it every week.
- Simply mix mild dish soap with warm water and soak the ring for 15 – 20 minutes.
- Gently scrub the ring with a soft toothbrush to remove any residue.
- Rinse the diamond ring under warm running water to remove any remaining soap, taking care not to let it fall down the plug hole.
- Then pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
